Artist Mentoring Programme Pilot

Oct 1st, 2018

Folk, roots and acoustic music is an important but niche genre within the UK music industry. Since 2012, English Folk Expo has been showcasing musicians to audiences of influential delegates from the UK and international music sector.

This has played a significant role in increasing the opportunities for showcasing artists to develop new audiences both in the UK and abroad. Throughout this time, feedback from EFEx delegates has indicated a need to equip artists with the business skills required to operate in an expanding, global market. In short, professionalising the emerging artist sector, preparing them for export and ensuring that artists are confidently in control of their careers. We’re pleased to announce the launch of a pilot course which will address this need.

From October 2018, four selected artists will take part in a year-long programme looking in depth at five key areas of the music industry: live touring, recorded music and intellectual property, audience development, business planning and stagecraft. The participants will take part in various industry events including EFEx, Featured Artists Coalition Artist:Entrepreneur Day, Americana-UK Conference, FOCUS Wales and a performance at Cambridge Folk Festival. They will work closely with specially selected mentors who will guide them through the year, tailoring
the learning to their needs.

Following the learning from this pilot, we intend to launch an open call to a full Artist Mentoring programme in Summer 2019.
