More artists announced for EFEx 2018

May 18th, 2018

While most of the programme for Manchester Folk Festival ’18, which provides the majority of the showcases for EFEx, has been announced, we are now able to add to this some of the artists who will perform at the private delegate-only events across the EFEx ’18 weekend from the 18th-21st October:

Xylaroo: Maidstone was where the duo began gigging (“around the Medway scene where all the bands were doing ska”), but it was really island life in Sri Lanka that added a rustic, vibrant flavour to their matter-of-fact, earthen songs. They say, ‘We want to write songs that make people think without telling them what to think.’

Tobias ben Jacob: Devon based alt-folk singer songwriter Tobias ben Jacob has been called ‘stand out new Folk’ by BBC6 Music and ‘inventive and thrilling’ by R2 Magazine. Jacob’s sweeping vocals never fail to captivate, delivering many a spine-tingling moment underpinned by the fluidity and precision of his finger-picking.

India Electric Co: Sometimes folk, sometimes not. India Electric Company use traditional instruments in contemporary styles to explore diverse themes from Eastern Europe, Irish traditions and urban alienation to end up with something “quirky and glittery – a veritable musical magpie’s nest.” – BBC Radio 3.

Solasta: Comprised of award-winning Scottish fiddler Elisabeth Flett, Welsh cellist Hannah Thomas and English guitarist Jamie Leeming, their dynamic interpretations of folk material are rooted firmly in tradition, whilst incorporating elements from diverse musical worlds including classical, jazz and early music.

Dipper Malkin: Dipper Malkin is the “potent combination” (Folk Radio UK) of two musicians that have spent their careers to date involved in groundbreaking projects. John Dipper (viola d’amore) was one third of The English Acoustic Collective alongside Chris Wood and Robert Harbron and currently works with string quartet Methera, while Dave Malkin (guitar, voice) was a founding member of trio Tandem, stylishly combining traditionally informed compositions with live electronics.

Becky Langan: Becky Langan is a percussive fingerstyle guitarist who employs a combination of extended techniques that explore the outermost reaches of the acoustic guitar. Becky was a semi-finalist on Guitar Star 2016 (Series 2) which aired on Sky Arts – a TV show which scours the UK to discover a world class guitarist.

Kimber’s Men: Audiences everywhere, rave over the a cappella harmonies of Kimber’s Men. They have appeared at Festivals in Ostende, Appingedam, Portmagee, Portsoy, Fano in Denmark, and all over the UK. Featured twice on Sunday brunch for Channel 4 ,they also starred in the BBC2 and BBC4 production of Sea Songs, with Gareth Malone..

Bryony Griffith: Bryony Griffith is an English fiddle player and singer from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire with a rich repertoire of English dance tunes and songs and is best known for her role in the BBC Folk Award-winning Demon Barbers and their current touring shows ‘DBXL’ and ‘The Lock In’.

Aidan, Patterson & Dashwood: Norwich based folk trio Alden, Patterson and Dashwood weave rich vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin around beautifully written original songs and melodies. ★★★★★ Album Of The Year Editors Choice – fROOTS Magazine 2016
